Chatham

Belinda

My first visit to Cape Cod when I was 14 years old with my parents had us staying with a dear friend in South Chatham. Sadly she is no longer with us, but my memories are vivid of the fun times we had together.

The downtown shopping which to a 14 year old was fun then, is extremely engaging now with many new stores as Main Street has grown. Chatham is a ‘must’ destination for many tourists in the summer, strolling through town, enjoying the Friday night band concerts and really just being in the ‘place to be’. Chatham hosts fabulous July 4th celebrations and First Night events for the entire family.

For a town surrounded pretty much by water, the best beaches are those on the Nantucket side. Throughout the rest of Chatham, even though there may be limited beach access, the views are absolutely spectacular and that is one of the reasons that draw people to this "quaint little fishing village” to live. The town used to be deserted in the wintertime, but not now. There is a vibrant year round community of young and old enjoying all the seasons.

Highlights of Chatham include seeing the extremely important lighthouse and the forever changing beach that bears its name; taking a charter boat out to see the enormous seal habitat and the outer beach; enjoying a clambake, a visit to the fish pier, and, of course, great fishing.

Chatham covers quite a deceivingly large area and as such, has varied and interesting real estate. You can still find an original cottage, or be mesmerized by the beauty of one of the estate homes on the water. Chatham holds a lot of history with its fishing fleet – a fleet that still struggles to survive. I am drawn often to the fish pier with my family and it is such a fascinating place to watch boats and people! As our family loves to eat fresh fish, there is no place better to enjoy a fresh catch.
